American-British actor and singer, best known for co-starring as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the TV series Starsky And Hutch (1975-1979). Soul scored one US hit with the song "Don't Give Up on Us" (1977) which reached No. 1 in the US and the UK. "Silver Lady" (1977) hit No. 1 in the UK. Soul was married five times and had five sons and one daughter. He made a debut as a singer on The Merv Griffin Show in 1966 and 1967 before landing a role in the TV series Here Come The Brides (1968-1970). On 27 March 1978 he had a back operation due to a ruptured disk. He was 21 when he married his high school sweetheart, Mirriam "Mim" Solberg (née Russeth), in 1964. The couple had one child, a son. The marriage lasted under two years, ending in divorce. Soul's second marriage was to actress Karen Carlson from 1968 to 1977. They had a son together, Kristjian Solberg, born 3 April 1971. On 9 September 1977, he had a paternity suit of $1.5 million for an illegitimate daughter that was disproved and settled out of court. From 1980 to 1986 he was married to Patti Carnel Sherman, ex-wife of teen idol Bobby Sherman; they had two sons. He was first in the news for spousal abuse when he was arrested for beating her. In the '90s he moved to England to work as a professional singer with a cabaret act, playing minor gigs and not making much money. He made a fourth marriage to actress Julia Nickson from December 1987 until they divorced in 1993; they had a daughter, China Soul, who became a singer-songwriter. As of 1995 he had chalked up four divorces and six kids, along with jail time for wife battering. A heavy drinker, he apparently had problems with self-control. In the early '90s he left TV acting and the U.S. behind, settling in London in 1995. He made a flourished career as an European recording artist and West End Stage actor. He returned to Hollywood to make a TV movie Terror in the Mall that came out on 29 July 1998. On 12 July 2004, the singer-actor stepped into the role of Jerry Springer in the London-based musical Jerry Springer - The Opera. Soul starred in the musical until January 2005. Soul married his fifth and last wife, Helen Snell on 26 June 2010. Snell was an English public relations officer in the British stage production of Deathtrap. They had been in a relationship since 2002 after meeting when Soul was working in that play. He referred to her as his soulmate. In 2004, Soul obtained British citizenship. He credited his relationship with Helen as his reason for obtaining citizenship and stated that he knew he "wanted to spend the rest of his life there with Helen." Soul was a three-pack-a-day cigarette smoker for fifty years. Although he had stopped smoking ten years prior to his death, he was seriously affected by COPD and had also had a lung removed due to cancer. Soul died in a London hospital surrounded by his family on 4 January 2024 at the age of 80.
